Polypropylene (PP) Balls – Lightweight Chemical-Resistant Plastic Balls

Polypropylene (PP) Balls are lightweight, non-magnetic, electrically insulating plastic balls designed for fluid control, level indication, flow metering, chemical handling, medical and laboratory equipment, and low-load mechanical assemblies. PP combines low density with good resistance to many acids, alkalis, alcohols, oils, greases, and inorganic substances, making it a practical choice where metal balls would be too heavy or vulnerable to corrosion.

SDBALLS supplies PP balls in sizes from 1.5 mm to 160 mm with Precision Grade I, II and III options. Standard reference properties include Shore D 70-80 hardness, density around 0.87-0.90 g/cm3, tensile strength around 40-50 MPa, and service temperature from approximately -30°C to +110°C. UV-stabilized material or application-specific colors may be discussed for projects exposed to sunlight or requiring visual identification.

Polypropylene Balls, also called PP balls, are engineering plastic balls used where low weight, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, and smooth movement are more important than high load capacity or high precision bearing performance. Compared with metal balls, PP balls reduce component weight, avoid magnetic interference, and improve corrosion resistance in many fluid-contact applications.

Because polypropylene has a lower density than water, PP balls are widely used in buoyancy-related designs such as float valves, level indicators, and liquid control systems. They are also used in check valves, flow meters, laboratory assemblies, medical components, and light mechanical systems where quiet, corrosion-resistant, non-metallic motion is required.

Material Selection & Technical Positioning

PP is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic material. It is selected when buyers need a cost-effective plastic ball with low density, good fatigue and impact resistance, good electrical insulation, and practical resistance to many common chemicals. It is especially useful in water-based systems, many chemical systems, and non-metallic device assemblies.

PP balls should not be positioned as high-load bearing balls, high-temperature engineering balls, or universal chemical-resistant balls. For higher mechanical strength and dimensional stability, POM / Delrin or nylon may be more suitable. For higher temperature or stronger chemical resistance, PTFE, PVDF, PEEK, ceramic, or stainless steel alternatives may be considered depending on the application.

Chemical Resistance & Temperature Performance

Polypropylene offers good resistance to many inorganic substances, weak acids, alkalis, alcohols, oils, greases, and water-based liquids. This makes PP balls suitable for many chemical handling, flow control, and laboratory applications. However, chemical compatibility should always be confirmed for the actual medium, concentration, temperature, pressure, and exposure time.

PP is not recommended as a universal solution for all chemicals. Strong oxidizing agents, halogens, certain aromatic hydrocarbons, and aggressive chemical conditions at elevated temperature may cause swelling, degradation, or performance loss. For outdoor or sunlit applications, UV stabilization should be specified when long exposure to sunlight is expected.

Manufacturing & Process Control

SDBALLS supplies PP balls through controlled material selection, molding or forming, size classification, surface inspection, cleaning, grade sorting, packing, and lot control. For plastic balls, material formulation, mold condition, cooling control, roundness, surface finish, and dimensional consistency are important to final application performance.

For OEM projects, SDBALLS can discuss ball diameter, color, grade, material formulation, UV stabilization, surface requirements, packing method, and sample approval before batch production. For fluid-control applications, buyers should provide the working medium, temperature, pressure, and assembly drawing when possible.

Quality Control & Inspection

Typical quality control items include diameter, roundness, surface appearance, color consistency, weight or density confirmation when required, hardness reference, packaging condition, and batch traceability. For valve, flow-meter, medical, or laboratory projects, inspection focus should be aligned with the final function of the part, not only the nominal ball size.

SDBALLS can support sample review, batch inspection, customized labeling, export packing, and documentation requirements according to project needs. Where RoHS, food-contact, medical, or third-party testing is required, the requirement should be confirmed before quotation and order confirmation.

Packing Options

PP balls can be supplied in bulk bags, cartons, pails, drums, pallets, or customized OEM packaging. Packing should be selected according to ball size, quantity, cleanliness requirement, transportation method, and customer receiving process.

For small precision components, inner bags and carton packing are commonly used. For larger balls or high-volume projects, drum or palletized packing may be more suitable. Customized labels can include material, size, grade, quantity, batch number, customer part number, and destination information.

How to Specify for Quotation

To quote accurately, please confirm: material (PP / polypropylene), diameter, precision grade, color, solid or hollow requirement if applicable, UV-stabilized requirement, working medium, operating temperature, application type, quantity, packing method, inspection documents, destination port, and trade term.

For replacement or OEM projects, please provide drawings, samples, current supplier specifications, tolerance requirements, chemical environment, load condition, and any compliance or cleanliness requirements. This helps SDBALLS recommend the correct plastic material and avoid over-specification or wrong material selection.

Technical FAQ

A: PP balls are used in float valves, check valves, flow meters, fluid level indicators, low-load bearings, laboratory devices, medical device components, blood transfusion kits, chemical handling systems, and light non-metallic assemblies.

Q: Do PP balls float in water?

A: Yes. PP has a density around 0.87-0.90 g/cm3, which is lower than water, so PP balls generally float. This makes them suitable for float and level-control applications.

F: Welcher Durchmesserbereich ist verfügbar?

A: SDBALLS supplies PP balls from 1.5 mm to 160 mm. Other sizes may be discussed according to production feasibility and order quantity.

F: Welche Präzisionssorten sind erhältlich?

A: Standard options include Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III. These plastic ball grades should be selected according to sealing, metering, movement, and cost requirements, and they are not the same as ISO 3290 steel ball grades.

Q: Are PP balls chemically resistant?

A: PP balls have good resistance to many acids, alkalis, alcohols, oils, greases, and inorganic substances. However, compatibility must be confirmed for the actual chemical, concentration, temperature, and exposure time, especially with strong oxidizers, halogens, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Q: Can PP balls be used outdoors?

A: They can be used in some outdoor or sunlit applications, but long-term sunlight exposure may degrade polypropylene. UV-stabilized material or additives should be specified when outdoor exposure is expected.

Q: Are PP balls suitable for high-load bearings?

A: No. PP balls are better suited for light-duty, low-load, non-metallic assemblies. For higher mechanical load, POM, nylon, stainless steel, chrome steel, ceramic, or other materials may be more suitable.

Q: Can SDBALLS supply custom PP balls?

A: Yes. SDBALLS can discuss custom diameter, color, grade, UV stabilization, packing, and OEM labeling. For special projects, drawings or samples are recommended before quotation.
