Soft Unhardened Carbon Steel Balls – Weldable Low Carbon Steel Balls

Soft Unhardened Carbon Steel Balls are low-carbon steel balls supplied without heat treatment for applications that require weldability, machinability, formability and economical bulk use rather than high hardness. Made from AISI 1010/1015 low carbon steel, these balls are suitable for welding appliances, decorative metalwork, curtain mechanisms, caddies, stirrers, mixers, general fabrication parts and selected outdoor steel shot applications where a softer steel ball is required.

SDBALLS supplies soft unhardened carbon steel balls in metric and inch sizes from 0.5 mm to 38.1 mm, with common precision grades including G200, G500 and G1000. Standard hardness is typically HRB 60-90. These balls are magnetic and economical, but they are not corrosion resistant and are not recommended for high-speed bearing, high-fatigue or precision load-bearing applications.

Обзор продукта

Soft Unhardened Carbon Steel Balls are economical low-carbon steel balls produced for applications where the ball needs to remain softer, more workable and easier to integrate into fabricated assemblies. Unlike case-hardened AISI 1010/1015 low carbon steel balls, these balls are supplied without carburizing or hardening. Unlike AISI 1085 high carbon steel balls or AISI 52100 chrome steel balls, they are not designed for high hardness, high-speed rotation or critical bearing fatigue performance.

For buyers, the main value of this product is practical workability. Soft unhardened carbon steel balls can be welded more easily than hardened steel balls and are more suitable for decorative metalwork, fabrication, curtain mechanisms, caddies, stirrers, mixers and low-stress general assemblies. They provide a cost-effective solution when the application does not require high wear resistance or corrosion resistance.

Material Selection & Technical Positioning

AISI 1010 and AISI 1015 are low carbon steels. In the soft unhardened condition, the balls retain lower hardness and better workability compared with hardened carbon steel or chrome steel balls. The correct industry terminology includes soft unhardened carbon steel balls, soft carbon steel balls, non-heat-treated carbon steel balls, AISI 1010 soft steel balls, AISI 1015 soft steel balls, weldable steel balls and mild steel balls.

This product should not be described as stainless, rustproof, bearing-grade or case-hardened. If the buyer requires wear resistance for drawer slides, castors, locks or semi-precision rolling systems, case-hardened AISI 1010/1015 low carbon steel balls may be more suitable. If the buyer requires high precision or high fatigue performance, AISI 52100 chrome steel balls should be considered. If the environment is wet, outdoor, food-contact, chemical or marine, stainless steel or plated alternatives should be reviewed before quotation.

Heat Treatment, Hardness & Performance

This product is supplied in a soft unhardened condition. It does not receive carburizing, case hardening or through hardening during normal production. The typical hardness range is HRB 60-90, which is much softer than case-hardened AISI 1010/1015 low carbon steel balls or through-hardened AISI 1085 high carbon steel balls.

Because the balls are not hardened, they provide better workability for welding and fabrication, but they also have lower wear resistance and lower load-bearing performance. They should not be selected for high-speed bearings, fatigue-critical rolling elements, high-load sliding systems or abrasive service where a hardened wear surface is required.

Manufacturing & Process Control

SDBALLS controls soft unhardened carbon steel ball production through raw material selection, wire drawing, cold heading, flashing, grinding or polishing when required, cleaning, rust-preventive oiling, inspection and packing. Since the product is supplied soft, the production route excludes carburizing and hardening unless the buyer specifically requests a different product type.

For projects requiring polished appearance, plating, special packing or downstream fabrication, SDBALLS can discuss surface preparation and size control before production. When plating or coating is required, final diameter tolerance should be confirmed because surface treatment can affect the finished size.

Quality Control & Inspection

Typical inspection items include diameter, precision grade, roundness, surface appearance, hardness, material confirmation, magnetic response and packing condition. For OEM projects, SDBALLS can discuss sample approval, inspection reports, third-party testing, RoHS requests, customized labeling and batch traceability requirements.

Because soft unhardened carbon steel balls are often used for fabrication and bulk consumption, buyers should confirm the application environment, downstream process and surface finish requirement before ordering. If the part will be welded, drilled, machined, plated or polished after delivery, these requirements should be included in the quotation stage

Packing Options

  • Bulk bags or cartons for general industrial consumption.
  • Drums, pails or pallets for export bulk shipments.
  • Rust-preventive oil packing for standard carbon steel protection during transportation.
  • Customized OEM labels with material, size, grade, batch number and quantity.
  • Special clean packing or separated size packing upon project confirmation.

Technical FAQ

Q: What is a soft unhardened carbon steel ball?

A: It is a low-carbon steel ball supplied without carburizing or heat treatment. It is softer than hardened carbon steel balls and is commonly used where weldability, fabrication and economical supply are more important than high hardness.

Q: What material grades are used for this product?

A: SDBALLS commonly supplies AISI 1010 and AISI 1015 low carbon steel balls. These grades are selected for soft, weldable and general-purpose applications.

Q: Are these balls hardened?

A: No. This page is for soft unhardened carbon steel balls. The typical hardness is HRB 60-90. If a hard wear-resistant surface is required, buyers should consider case-hardened AISI 1010/1015 low carbon steel balls instead.

Q: Can soft unhardened carbon steel balls be welded?

A: Yes. Weldability is one of the main reasons buyers select soft low-carbon steel balls. Welding performance still depends on the exact material, surface condition, cleanliness and welding process.

Q: Can these balls be drilled, machined or threaded?

A: In many fabrication applications, soft unhardened carbon steel balls are easier to drill, machine or modify than hardened steel balls. The buyer should confirm the downstream process and required tolerance before quotation.

Q: Are these balls corrosion resistant?

A: No. Low carbon steel is not corrosion resistant. For rust-sensitive use, buyers should consider oil protection, zinc plating, nickel plating, chrome plating or stainless steel balls depending on the working environment.

Q: Can these balls be polished or plated?

A: Yes. Soft carbon steel balls can be supplied plain, polished, oiled or plated upon request. Plating thickness and final diameter tolerance should be confirmed before production.

Q: Can these balls replace chrome steel bearing balls?

A: Usually no for high-speed or fatigue-critical bearing applications. Soft unhardened carbon steel balls are for weldable, decorative, fabrication and low-stress uses. For precision bearings, AISI 52100 chrome steel balls are normally more appropriate.

Q: What information is needed for a quotation?

A: Please provide material grade, diameter, precision grade, soft/hardness requirement, surface finish, quantity, packing, application, downstream process, inspection document requirement, destination and trade term.
